It’s been a rough 21st century for sex. Gone are the days when you could just pop the question and bam, there were fireworks and a smiling face. For the past few years, the world of sex has been thrown a curveball as pandemic after pandemic has rocked the globe. First it was COVID-19, then SARS, MERS, and now NDS. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have reared their ugly head, and there’s no sign that this rampant sexually transmitted disease (RMSD) is anywhere near a fondle-free moment. We couldn’t marry our fiancees without risking infection. Our spouses couldn’t visit the wedding ceremony without being put at risk of contracting one of these terrible diseases. While we wait for mandatory quarantine to be over, it’s a good idea to be prepared for when it’s done and take couples therapy or sex therapy to help reconnect and rebuild trust.
Is VIAGRA The Anchor of Hope In This PANDEMIC SURVIVAL SESS
Amidst the throngs of masks, stigmatizing quarantines, and lockdowns, one pharmaceutical in particular has stuck out from the coronavirus cocoon. This substance, prohibited by law in some countries, is popularly known as Viagra. Viagra and its siblings Sildenafil and Tadalafil are examples of a group of medicinal substances known as PDE5 inhibitors. They are taken to relieve angina, or chest pain, and some evidence suggests that they may also help reduce the symptoms of COVID-19.
The pharmaceutical industry saw a market opportunity and quickly pondered whether or not Viagra could hope to find a home in the fight against this terrible virus. They made no bones about promoting the drug for this purpose, and it was, in fact, approved in the US for treatment of COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms. The FDA mandated that doctors and nurses stop by and fill out a questionnaire after the drug was approved for that purpose. It was clear that while we may still be in the middle of pandemic, this drug was needed and wanted if we are ever going to make it out of this virus.
MEDICAL NEWS NOTES
The US FDA approved the use of Viagra for treatment of COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms. The head of pharmacological treatment at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Lydia Shaw, said of the news:
“Treatment of COVID-19 with Viagra has the potential to become a common practice. The FDA approved this use for COVID-19 patients with severe symptoms. Inevitably, as with all newly approved therapies, there will be questions about the safety and the efficacy of this drug in combination with other treatments. However, Viagra is one of the only drugs that has been specifically approved for the treatment of COVID-19, and it is clear that doctors are committed to trying this option for their patients.”
This is a positive step forward, and it is important to note that this is the first treatment we’ve had against this infection. But it also marks the beginning of a dubious era. There is a bounty of opportunity for criminals to game the system, and it’s important for us to remain vigilant as ever against fraudulent practices.
