I guess everyone has an opinion about actor Charlie Sheen, but whether it’s good or bad, there’s rarely any middle ground. His Twitter account boasts more than 4.7 million followers, many of whom undoubtedly visit the site looking for new material to dissect. For those hoping to get some insight into the mind of one of Hollywood’s most controversial figures, we’ve got some interesting statistics and tidbits to share.
The Most Shared Tweet
Now, a lot of Twitter users share a lot of garbage content, so some of this data might not mean much. What is interesting, however, is that Charlie Sheen’s account is the most shared celebrity Twitter account in terms of total tweets. It averages about 18 tweets per day, which makes it more popular than even pop-star Beyoncé’s account.
It should come as no surprise that someone as outrageous as Charlie would have such a large and active Twitter following. It’s kind of like what happens when you fuse Elon Musk with Rick Moranis. The result is undeniably hilarious, if a bit shocking.
The Largest Following On Twitter
Another interesting fact about Charlie Sheen’s account is that it’s currently the 6th most followed account on the platform, with more than 4.7 million followers. It’s only behind the @REAL_BenAffleck, @REAL_BarackObama, @REAL_Beyonce, @REAL_DwayneJohnson, and @REAL_DavidDresser accounts.
As you might expect, celebrities and public figures have the most followers on the platform. There are currently 2.3 million accounts with over 100,000 followers, while the next most followed group has between 10,000 and 100,000 followers. In terms of the most followed account itself, it has 5.7 million followers.
The Meanest Following
A Twitter account’s follower base is often a good indicator of that account’s popularity and virality. The most followed account on the platform, @REAL_DwayneJohnson, has over 4.9 million followers, the second most followed is @REAL_CharlieSheen with 4.7 million. You’ll notice that the two most followed accounts are sports celebrities, and they’re both (arguably) extremely sarcastic and/or mean-spirited. A quick glance at their respective Twitter bios will confirm this. For example, Dwayne’s bio includes the following quote:
“I invented the term ‘tweet’ (short for ‘tweety’), and the way you tell someone to go to hell is you type ‘@REAL_DwayneJohnson’ and then you hit enter.”
This, of course, is a play on words. The term “tweet” is often used when referring to a post on social media, while the act of tweeting generally involves sending a quick message to a large audience via social media. A simple but effective strategy for boosting your Twitter following is to follow prominent celebrities, sports stars, and/or public figures.
The most followed soccer player on the platform, Neymar, has 308 million followers, and the most followed rapper, Lil Wayne, has 254 million following him. While neither of these accounts are particularly mean-spirited or irritating, it’s clear that a large number of people find them so. Interestingly, there are 3.2 million accounts with between 10 and 100 thousand followers that are (at least arguably) quite funny, as well.
The Most Liked Tweet
Likes on Twitter are a fairly simple and straightforward thing to track. Just look for all the green check marks in the upper right-hand corner of your screen:
From what we can see, many Twitter users have been enjoying @REAL_KanyeWest’s controversial yet brilliant comparison of Beyoncé and his wife, Kim Kardashian.
“Kim Kardashian’s a great person, she’s funny, she’s sharp, she’s everything you could want in a woman. And then you put that next to Beyoncé, the most amazing woman in the world. And I don’t think there’s anything more beautiful than Michelle Obama and her kids,” Kanye said in the tweet.
The tweet has been liked nearly 22 million times, which is pretty incredible when you think about it. The most popular individual tweet on the platform is by far @REAL_KimKardashian with over 24 million likes, followed by @REAL_KanyeWest (21.5 million) and @REAL_Beyonce (20.2 million).
The Most Retweeted Tweet
In addition to likes, retweets are another easy way to measure a Twitter user’s popularity and/or engagement on the platform. When you see the little blue check mark in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, you know someone is paying attention and engaging with your content:
Again, this can be quite an accurate measure of a Twitter user’s popularity. The most retweeted tweet on the platform is by far @REAL_CharlieSheen, with nearly 7 million retweets. The second most retweeted tweet is a tie between @REAL_KanyeWest and @REAL_Beyonce, both with 6 million retweets. The most retweeted individual tweet belongs to a comedian named Matt Lee, and it has over 4.7 million retweets.
As you’ll see in the next section, retweet counts are also an important indicator of a tweet’s success and/or influence on the platform. The most retweeted tweet in the entire history of Twitter is…the original Matt Lee tweet. Yes, that really is the case. The comedian’s tweet about Barack Obama winning the Nobel Peace Prize has now been retweeted over 12.7 million times.
The Most Shared Article
In our opinion, the most shared article is an Interesting article from The New York Times about the trouble that celebrities can get themselves into on Twitter. It was shared over 12,000 times on the platform.
One of the more bizarre stories in the article involves Paris Hilton’s attempted comeback following a widely publicized hacking attempt that made it look like she was having an affair with her laptop. The reality was that someone had accessed her Twitter account and was sending her abusive tweets from the @parishilton account. She had to hire security guards and disable all access to the account. As horrible as this incident was, it did make Paris one of the most followed users on the platform. Unfortunately, her notoriety often makes her a target for those looking to cause trouble on Twitter. Since she’s always available to quotes, they choose to go after her.
The Most Influential Tweet
Measuring the influence of a person or group of people using social media is a bit more difficult than simply counting the number of followers they have. To get a better sense of how influential someone or something is on Twitter, you need to look at a number of factors, including the amount of retweets and favorites an account receives, as well as the amount of original content they produce. The best indicator of influence is the number of topics a user can engage with. To determine how influential someone or something is using Twitter, look at their @Mentions (when they talk about other users).
Many people will point to Kanye West as the god of Twitter. Nearly everything he says seems to have some influence on the platform, and it’s clear that he uses Twitter to promote his ideas and worldview. His account has nearly 55 million followers, and he regularly retweets notable content, most notably from politicians. With over 90 million followers, President Trump is the most followed user on the platform. He’s followed by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, with over 43 million followers.
