For those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you might know that I usually avoid talking about medical matters on my blog. But since so many of you have been asking about it, I am making an exception.
Peyronie’s disease is one of the most frustrating conditions you can have as a man. It causes pain and difficulty in having an erection. If you’ve ever tried to sleep with your penis in an uncomfortable position, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Not only that, but it can also make having sex rough and painful. For some men, it can be totally debilitating.
Fortunately, there is help. But before we get into the good stuff, let’s get the bad stuff out of the way. Just so you know what you’re getting into, about 75% of men will experience some sort of sexual dysfunction, be it low libido or complete erectile dysfunction, by the time they reach 60 years old.
With that in mind, here are the 5 facts you need to know about Peyronie’s disease.
It’s Named After The Austrian Surgeon, Ernest Peyronie
In the early 1900s, a surgeon by the name of Ernest Peyronie noticed that men with Peyronie’s disease had deformities in the shape of a ‘’P”. What’s more, these men often had difficulties getting an erection or maintaining one. So, quite logically, he named the disease after himself. To this day, it is commonly referred to as ‘’Peyronie’s disease”.
It’s Prevalent In Men With A History Of Prostate Problems
It’s well known that about 75% of men with Peyronie’s disease also have prostatitis, also known as ‘’inflammation of the prostate”. To put it simply, prostatitis makes it harder for the prostate to perform its function of producing prostate fluid. Essentially, men with a history of prostatitis are more likely to get Peyronie’s disease. But there is still no known cause for prostatitis. So while we wait for science to figure out what the connection is, we have to make the best of it and live with the results.
It’s Usually Painful
Even if you don’t have a history of prostate problems, most men will experience some level of pain from Peyronie’s disease. The only treatment options are medications and surgeries. But, as I mentioned above, so many men develop this condition that there is always the risk of complications. And, of course, there is the pain associated with the condition itself. So if you’re planning on having sex, trying to make love to your wife, or whatever else that requires you to become sexually aroused, you are going to have to deal with the pain.
It’s Commonly Found In Men Who Have Overweight Or Obesity Issues
As mentioned above, about 75% of men with Peyronie’s disease also have problems with their prostates. As it turns out, having an enlarged prostate can cause lots of other health issues that are often connected to having erectile dysfunction. So it’s not strange that men with enlarged prostates are more likely to develop Peyronie’s disease. In addition to that, being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing this condition. Try to lose a little weight and get some exercise to improve both your health and the quality of your life.
It’s Linked To Poor Overall Health
If you scroll down to my blog’s sidebar, you’ll see that I list the main causes of ED along with the % associated with each cause. To my surprise, the main cause of ED is usually ‘’poor overall health”. Simply put, men with poor overall health have a higher chance of getting ED. And, as we all know, poor overall health can result from many different problems, both physical and mental. So it’s not entirely surprising that men with ED are more likely to have Peyronie’s disease. But the fact remains that there is no conclusive proof as to why this is. All we know for sure is that there is a strong link between the two conditions.
There Is Help For Those Who Need It
As I mentioned above, there is help available for those with Peyronie’s disease. However, not all men will need or want that help. So it’s important to understand what your options are. Usually, the first thing you will want to do is try natural remedies, such as vitamins E and C, saw palmetto, and green tea, as these have shown some efficacy in treating this condition. If nothing else works, then you have the option of trying medical treatment. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Peyronie’s disease. But there are various medications that can help reduce the pain and stiffness. For those who don’t want to try alternative methods, the drug Tadalafil, which is made from the flower of an African plant, can also be an effective treatment option. The fact remains that none of these treatments are curative, so you will still need to live with the condition. However, at least you will have some options.
So there you have it. Just a few facts about Peyronie’s disease. As you can see, it’s more common in men than women. However, women are more prone to developing serious complications due to the condition. So it’s always good to be aware of this fact and have the proper treatment options available. If you don’t want to deal with this condition, then try to lose some weight and be healthy. That is the best way to avoid getting it in the first place, as well as to improve your quality of life when you do get it.
